While the final battle does somewhat come out of nowhere in the movie, it’s done to set up elements for the next season of the anime and in that it succeeds magnificently. You care about what happens to them, which makes their respective battles so poignant when they face overwhelming odds. This is something that also carries over to Kyojuro Rengoku as well. However, it helps that Tanjiro is a decent protagonist that works hard and is remarkably selfless. The Taishō period costumes and societal norms are something that currently resonate in Japan, which the dramatic fight sequences only help to feed into and reinforce. I do feel that much of this movie’s appeal will be lost on many people outside of Japan though. ©Koyoharu Gotoge / SHUEISHA, Aniplex, ufotable The animation by ufotable is very well done.
